Some few days ago, students from various Cuban universities held a student strike.

It forms part of the protest against an abusive and excessive increase in mobile phone prices announced by the state provider ETECSA. This increase in internet costs would exclude a large part of the population from real access to the internet.

Various teaching faculties have expressed their support for the student demands.

The authorities responded with a special offer for students, but the student assemblies in different faculties rejected it because this resolves nothing for the majority of working class and poor people.

Both the right wing internationally and the ruling Cuban bureaucracy will try to present this struggle as a rejection of socialism, but that is not true.

This student mobilisation does not seek to move closer to the neoliberal model that the USA has been trying to impose for years. Rather, it rejects the neoliberal and authoritarian drift of the bureaucratic leadership that, together with attacks from outside —such as the blockade and other interventions by US imperialism, which we totally reject—, has led to the current critical situation on the island.

As one student denounced at one of the assemblies, «This measure is not socialist, comrades.»

Or as the University Student Federation of the Faculty of Media Arts of the Higher Institute of Art declared on June 6, 2025: «There is no more revolutionary act today than the fight for social equality.»

They demand that the oft-repeated promises of social justice, people’s power, etc., be fulfilled for once.

As students, teachers, or citizens in general, we express our solidarity with this student struggle. Let’s fight for social justice and true democracy in Cuba and around the world.
